3 Transylvanian Saxon Remedies for Eye Problems

1. Conjunctivitis

The most common symptoms of conjunctivitis are red and irritated, watery, and stinging eyes, and the most common causes are injuries, irritations, allergic reactions, bacteria, or viruses. There is a special herb in Saxon medicine for curing conjunctivitis, namely, European eyebright (Euphrasia stricta). Steep 1/2 teaspoon of eyebright herb in 1 cup of boiling water for 1-2 minutes. Strain and allow to cool. After it has cooled down, apply a compress on the closed eyelids and hold for 5-10 minutes. Repeat the process several times a day. Eyebright contains, among other things, aucubin, a substance with anti-inflammatory effects. Eyebright drops are as effective.

2. Styes

Apply flax seed compresses over the eyelids. Mix 2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds with 2 cups of boiling water and allow to swell a little. Soften a cheesecloth or a piece of cotton wool in the flax infusion, and keep it on the inflamed eyelid for 20 minutes. Stye pain can also be relieved with potato porridge. Mash a boiled, peeled potato with a fork, and mix it with 1 egg yolk and a little hot milk, until you get a porridge. Spread it on a cheesecloth and kept on the eyes for 20 minutes. Repeat the application 2-3 times a day. Potatoes are anti-inflammatory, while flax seeds accelerate the healing of the stye.

3. Tired Eyes

Eyebright is a blessing for the eyes in traditional Saxon medicine from Transylvania. Saxons used it in two ways for tired eyes: as a hot tea or cold compress. To make the tea, steep a teaspoon of eyebright herb in a cup of hot water for 2 minutes, strain, and drink. Or, soak a piece of cotton wool in the chilled eyebright tea and apply it to the closed eyelids. The substances in eyebright soothe irritated eyes, and this is one of the best Transylvanian Saxon remedies for all eye problems.
