How to Harvest Juniper Berries

Juniper berries can be harvested from about September through to December when they are fully ripe (are deep purplish-blue with a waxy appearance). Picking juniper berries is one of the most complicated berry-picking operations of this kind. Juniper leaves are extremely tough and can sting while its berries are much too small to be picked one by one. Hence, unless you make it your purpose to harvest juniper berries yearly, we recommend purchasing the berries from a local health shop.

If you still want to pick by hand, you will need a thick pair of gloves and a tarp to place under the juniper bush. Give the bush a good shake and collect the juniper berries that have fallen on the tarp, then separate the berries from the vegetable remains and you have your freshly harvested juniper berries.

How to Make Juniper Berry Tea

Soak 3-4 teaspoons of crushed juniper berries (Juniperus communis) in 1/2 liter (2 cups) of water at room temperature for 8-10 hours, or overnight. Strain the cold maceration and set aside. Boil the used berries in another half liter of water for five minutes, then remove from the heat, and allow to cool down. Finally, mix the two extracts. You will obtain approximately one liter (4 cups) of juniper berry tea (a combined tea of a cold maceration and a decoction). The daily recommended dosage is 2-3 cups per day, but this may vary.

3 Health Uses of Juniper Berry Tea

1. Gastritis Caused by Helicobacter Pylori

Juniper berry tea has a strong antibiotic effect especially targeting Helicobacter pylori strains. This bacterium is responsible for at least 25% of gastritis cases diagnosed annually. The recommended dosage is 3 cups of juniper berry tea a day, one in the morning, one at lunch, and the last one in the evening, 15 minutes before eating. For best results, drink this tea for 21 days, followed by a 14-day break, and resume if needed.

2. Gout

For gout and rheumatic problems, the recommended dosage is one liter (4 cups) of juniper berry tea daily for 20 days, followed by a 20-day break. This healing decoction dissolves uric acid in the body and helps to eliminate it massively through urine. This treatment is effective not only for gout but also for kidney stones with urates.

3. Diabetes Adjuvant

A team of Spanish researchers led by Doctor Sanchez de Medina published a study in 1994 about the effects of juniper berries on diabetes. According to this study, combined juniper infusion (juniper berry decoction) lowered blood sugar levels by 5-15%, improved diuresis, prevented the formation of edema, and had a regulatory effect on the activity of the cardiovascular system, which is the most impacted in the case of diabetes. The dosage in this case is one liter of juniper berry tea/decoction throughout the day. A treatment lasts 21 days, followed by a minimum 18-day break, after which it can be resumed.
