9 Foods That Repair DNA Damage

by Andreea Laza

Looking for the top foods that repair DNA damage and prevent further damage to your DNA? Continue reading this article and find out what they are.

The best foods that prevent and repair DNA damage fall in two categories: are rich in nucleic acids and/or help activate telomerase.

Let’s start with the first category. Nucleic acids are what make up your DNA, which is the genetic information of the cells in your body. These acids are made of nucleotides, essential molecules that boost cell growth, neutralize toxins, regulate cellular metabolism, and strengthen the immune system by helping antioxidants in the body to carry out their processes in reducing damage caused by oxidative stress.

Your body is usually able to naturally produce enough nucleotides to sustain the body process efficiently, but when you are under extreme stress, bringing in foods that are rich in nucleic acids can help prevent and repair DNA damage.

There is a second category of foods that repair DNA damage by activating a protein called telomerase. Telomerase is a protein that restores short bits of DNA known as telomeres, which are otherwise shortened after each cell division. Telomeres are the end parts of chromosomes and have the role of preserving the youth and integrity of human genetic material. Luckily, the foods below naturally activate telomerase and thus help prevent and repair DNA damage. Without further ado, these are the best foods that repair DNA damage.

Top 9 Foods That Repair DNA Damage

1. Raw Honey

The fructose and glucose in honey are saturated with more than 200,000 phytochemical compounds and agents that protect you from radiation damage, prevent cancer, and kill off pathogens. Raw honey is also high in minerals such as calcium, potassium, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, chromium, molybdenum, and manganese. Together with B12 coenzymes, raw honey makes one of the most powerful brain foods of our time. Raw wildflower honey is the best type of honey to repair DNA damage. Adding royal jelly to raw honey doubles its DNA protection and repair powers.

2. Nettle

Stinging nettle is known for its amazing ability to cleanse the blood when used as food (scald, season with salt and eat as is or in salads), but also for its detox properties, because it has the ability to neutralize toxic antigens in the body. In this case, you can drink nettle infusions, or as a tincture. Nettle is rich in chlorophyll, sterols, vitamins C, B2, and K, pantothenic acid, folic acid, calcium salts, magnesium, iron, silica, etc.

3. Spirulina

The amino acids in spirulina are easily recognized by our DNA and RNA, which is why this superfood is not a cure for a specific disease, but a panacea for the body because it simultaneously stimulates and normalizes all its functions. It is one of the most powerful detox foods, especially for heavy metals, which are found in some allopathic drugs and medicine.

4. Wild Blueberries

Dark-colored fruits are very rich in resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that prolongs telomeres and protects the DNA of human cells from harmful mutations. The richest fruits in resveratrol are wild blueberries, plums, black grapes, and blackcurrants. Out of this list, wild blueberries are also known for their amazing detox effect and their great support in cancer or conditions related to the brain and/or nerves. You can have them fresh, or in powdered form, that you can add to smoothies.

5. Cruciferous Vegetables

A recent study showed that cruciferous vegetables contain a metabolite called sulforaphane that has an epigenetic effect by inhibiting HDAC and DNA methyltransferases and modifies mitochondrial dynamics. In simple terms, it increases cellular lifespan and prevents neurodegeneration by protecting the integrity of our DNA. Cruciferous veggies are among the most powerful telomerase activators. The top cruciferous vegetables that repair DNA damage are broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, and Chinese cabbage.

6. Wild Mushrooms

The nucleobases, nucleosides, and nucleotides found in mushrooms play important roles in the regulation of various physiological processes in the human body, including DNA protection and cancer prevention, according to this study. Amongst the edible wild mushrooms, there are also some with proven DNA repair and protection properties such as Cordyceps and Reishi. We recommend that you read this article here on healing mushrooms and how to use them.

7. Sprouts

These superfoods improve cardiovascular health, prevent heart disease and stroke, improve bone density, and protect DNA against free radicals. A 2007 study showed that consumption of sprouts leads to inhibition of SULTs in humans, involved in the activation of a number of genotoxic carcinogens, and protection against oxidative DNA damage. Eating 100 g of sprouts a day has been shown to protect against DNA damage. The most effective sprouts that repair DNA damage are broccoli, alfalfa, clover, and radish sprouts.

8. Spinach

Spinach, as well as most leafy greens, helps to remove, purge, and drain the lymphatic system of toxins and alkalize the body. Raw spinach leaves are packed with bioavailable iodine, chromium, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, potassium, silica, manganese, and molybdenum which play an important role in neuronal support. Consuming spinach regularly also helps protect against oxidative DNA damage, according to this study. Spinach should only be eaten raw.

9. Raw Nuts

Raw nuts are a powerful source of nucleic acids, while their high content of protein and unsaturated fats make them a great natural way to prevent heart problems. The best types of nuts that can help repair DNA damage are raw walnuts and almonds. Flax seeds, and flaxseed oil, as well as raw olives (unoxidized), are also great sources of healthy fats that prevent DNA damage. Nuts and fats, in general, should be consumed in small portions because too many fats in the diet (even healthy fats) overburden the liver and impede the natural detox process of the body.

Only Natural Foods Repair DNA Damage

The human body functions as a smooth computer because it has embedded in its memory the genetic code that we were born with. This genetic code only tracks records of natural foods. For instance, it recognizes fresh lemon juice and natural vitamin C but does not know what to do with their synthetic variants, citric acid, and ascorbic acid. BTW, ascorbic acid replaces most Vitamin C supplements on the market.

There are over 200 chemicals foreign to our genetic code that enter our bodies daily. It is very dangerous to bring synthetic nucleotides into the body (synthetic vitamin B6, Pp, A, synthetic calcium, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, folic acid, etc) because they trigger antibodies, antinuclei, anti-cells reaction, and thus create the perfect environment for the so-called autoimmune diseases, mystery illnesses, and even cancers.

The solution is returning to nature, to natural foods, and ditching the chemical, GMO, and toxic processed food products that do not even deserve being called foods, to begin with. We hope that learning about the foods that repair DNA damage has empowered you. Stay healthy, naturally!

Hi Therisia! The most important thing to do when you have type 2 diabetes is to follow a low-fat diet, because it’s actually a stagnant, sluggish, overburdened, or weakened liver and dysfunctional adrenal glands lead to hypoglycemia and thus to type 2 diabetes. Have plenty fresh fruit and vegetables and reduce fats to the maximum, even the healthy fats such as avocado, nuts and seeds, coconut oil. The liver and the adrenals need a detox and rest. A low-fat plant-based diet is ideal in overcoming type 2 diabetes. We’ve also published an article on natural remedies for diabetes, but I cannot give medical advice on what to replace metformin for. For this, I kindly recommend that you consult a naturopath. Much health to you! 💚
