5 Powerful Natural Remedies for Nose Irritation

by Andreea Laza

Looking for powerful natural remedies for nose irritations that actually work? Learn how to use herbs for nose problems.

The nose serves as the gateway to the body, connecting it with the external environment. Its primary function, beyond the sense of smell, is to condition the air: humidification and heating, filtration, and removal of particles from the breathed air (dust and microorganisms). Like any part of the body, the nose can become irritated, and well-applied local treatments using herbal remedies are often enough. The main preparations used as external treatments for nose irritation are herbal teas, tinctures, essential oils, ointments, and aerosols. Let’s explore the five powerful natural remedies for nose irritations.

5 Natural Remedies for Nose Irritation and How to Use

1. Steam Inhalations

The first natural remedies used by primitive people to alleviate or heal nasal irritations were inhalations. The herbs recommended for nose irritation inhalations are calendula, yarrow, chamomile, mint, jasmine, lemon balm, basil, and thyme. Here is how to prepare a steam inhalation at home:

  • Add 2 tablespoons of coarsely chopped dried herb (see below) in 1 liter of boiling water.
  • Alternatively, you can use 5 drops of essential oil or 1 teaspoon of herbal tincture instead of dried plant.
  • Bend your head over the pot and cover with a towel.
  • Perform 1-minute deep breathing exercises to inhale the vapor rich in essential oils through the nose.

Do the steam inhalation in the evening before going to bed. After the inhalation, you can use nasal drops of natural salves to support the healing of the nasal mucosa. Here are the herbs that are most effective for steam inhalation for nasal irritations:

  • Calendula (Calendula officinalis) – Inhalations using an infusion of calendula flowers are recommended for respiratory system conditions, ENT (ear, nose, throat) issues, or other viral conditions located in the nose area. To increase the effectiveness of the inhalations, add 20 drops of pine, juniper, or eucalyptus essential oil to the steaming pot.
  • Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) – Yarrow inhalations are recommended for allergic or infectious rhinitis and sinusitis, and both nasal congestion and runny nose. Use the whole plant with flowers.
  • Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) – Inhalations with chamomile tea, similar to yarrow tea, are used for allergic or infectious rhinitis and rhinosinusitis, which manifest as nasal congestion or runny nose. Use the flowers, harvested before full bloom.
  • Aromatic Herbs (peppermint, jasmine, lemon balm, basil, thyme): Add 5 drops of essential oil or 20 drops of herb tincture to the tea made from black poplar buds, chamomile, or pine buds, following the recipe and instructions above.

2. Nasal Rinse

A key role in the success of topical treatments for nasal irritation is proper nasal hygiene. Nasal rinses help to eliminate excess mucus that obstructs breathing and create a favorable environment for pathogenic bacteria to grow. Nasal rinses can be made with herbal teas rich in volatile oils (such as mint, jasmine, lemon balm, basil, and thyme), adding a pinch of kitchen salt (1 g per cup of tea). For a more profound cleansing, you can use a neti pot.

Additionally, nasal rinses can be done with saline solution and natural vitamin C. For this, rinse your nose with a solution made of saline and vitamin C, in a 10:2 ratio (2 ml of vitamin C -ampoules- to a 10 ml saline). Put 10 drops in each nostril and blow your nose gently.

3. Nasal Spray

Nasal spray is a commonly used remedy for nose irritation and inflammation as they are easier to use than other preparations. Use the nasal spray after steam inhalations and/or nasal rinses. One of the best natural nasal sprays you can find for irritations that has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiallergic properties is the silver nasal spray from Sovereign Silver.

4. Nasal Salve

An alternative to the nasal spray is a nasal salve that can be applied locally. A herbal nasal valve has a good adherence to the mucosa and does not need to be used more than a couple of times per day. Additionally, it helps prevent the drying of the nasal mucosa. Use your clean fingertip or an ear stick to gently apply a small amount of salve inside the nostrils, but not too deep. Then lightly press your nostrils against the nasal septum to spread the salve all around. For this, you can use a natural calendula, chamomile salve, or a combination. If you want to make your own salve, find a recipe here.

5. Herbal Nasal Packing

Last but not least, nasal packings are used for nosebleeds caused by acute hypertension or accidental blows to the nose. They are also effective in case of prolonged nasal inflammation. To make a herbal nasal packing dab a sterile compress in a warm tannin-rich tea such as an oak bark decoction, or lady’s mantle infusion. Remove it after it has turned cold.
